Club History

On 14th March 1932, in the Raymond Terrace School of Arts, a meeting was convened to form a Bowling Club.

Bowls were first played on the privately owned green of Mr Henry Sutton in Glenelg Street. An annual fee of 10 shillings was paid to Mr Sutton.

At a General Meeting on 8th April 1932 ladies were invited to join the club.

Allwork on the greens was done in a voluntary scheme. All goods and materials used were donated by members. Fees were ten shillings and sixpence. Mr Sutton built a small clubhouse at the green in 1933. The first social event was a dance on the green in December 1932. Electric lights were installed in January 1933.

At the AGM on 14th July 1941 moves were made to set up a green and clubhouse on the market reserve, the site of the present clubhouse. With the assistance of Port Stephens Council, as well as the efforts of the club members, the transfer of the club from Suttons took place in 1942.

Triple header for Raymond Terrace

After having their first game washed out the Raymond Terrace Jets began their NSW Premier League campaign last weekend with a triple header.
Their first game was against Merryland Magic played at Merryland Bowling Club on Friday night. The Magic were too good for the boys on the night and defeated the Jets 63 to 51.
On Saturday the boys were at home against Roseland Devils. The Jets came back from their defeat on Friday night beating the Devils 60 to 43.
The final game of the weekend was against Cabramatta Bull Ants played on Sunday under the covers. Last year's winners were no match for the Jets on the day being defeated by our boys 70 to 50.
A very successful weekend for Raymond Terrace. Go the Jets!

NSW Rookies Final Series

The NSW Rookies Finals Series (Lawn Bowls) was played at Raymond Terrace Bowing Club on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October.

The Bowls NSW Rookies is a state-wide competition aimed at relatively inexperienced bowlers. To be able to play the bowler must have less than 30 months experience in the sport.

Contestants played matches in their local areas to qualify for the State Finals, with a finalist from each of the sixteen NSW Bowls Zones progressing  in each of the singles and pairs competitions.

The Rookies competitions are all about giving players the opportunity to play, featuring shorter length games and more games per day.

The NSW Rookies Finals Series divides the 16 qualifiers into four pools of four teams. They play each team in their pool, with the top ranked team in each pool progressing to the Semi Finals.

The Zone 2 (Newcastle) Representatives in the Pairs were Phillip Smith and Lee Bloor from Cardiff BC and in the singles Owen Elliot from Nelson Bay. Unfortunately the Cardiff combination was knocked out at the Semi Final stage by the eventual winners, Novak Kuzmanovic and Moris Luckwell (The Hills, Zone 10). However Nelson Bay's Owen Elliott, after winning his section via a count back, brought home Zone 2's and Nelson Bay's third title in the three years that Bowls NSW has been conducting the State Rookies Championships.

RSL Bowls

On 27th September, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club hosted 60 RSL bowlers with Zone 5 (Central Coast) playing Zone 6 (Newcastle). Zone 6 were the victors for the first time in 6 years.
Due to the inclement weather the game was unable to be played at the intended location so Raymond Terrace became the new venue at the last minute. With the shades covering our 2 front greens its possible to play in all types of weather.
Our new caterers from Creation 2 did an excellent job of providing meals for 60 bowlers at the last minute.

C v D Group Playoff

On the 12th and 13th September, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club hosted the C v D Group Playoff. C Group consisted of players from Nepean and Western Districts. D Group consisted of players from the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Hunter River and Upper Hunter.
The ladies of Raymond Terrace Bowling Club did an excellent job in providing catering and behind the scenes support.
Thank you ladies for working so hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly throughout the playoffs.

A Step Back In Time

Raymond Terrace Women's Bowling Club began in June 1933 with 7 members and by its Golden Anniversary in 1983 had 113 members.
Play was commenced on a green in Glenelg Street which was privately owned by Mr. H. Sutton to whom 10/- per year per member was paid to help maintain it.
In 1942 the club decided to acquire its own greens and clubhouse and, with the assistance of the Port Stephens Shire Council, moved later that year to their present site.
There were frew facilities until 1956 when a new dining area, kitchen and indoor garden were added and in 1973 the clubhouse was again upgraded with the building of a lounge room, complete with new carpets and curtains.
From the inception of the club until 1973 the ladies did the catering, from ordering to serving, for all functions held.
Over the years the members have helped many charities throughtheir fund raising activites and have been ver competitive, playing in tournaments around the area, District pennants and fixtures with much success and also entertaining visitors fro other districts and States.
